Familiar privacy policy

Familiar is a macOS menu bar utility made by TJ. It brings Windows keyboard habits to a Mac: cut and paste files in Finder with ⌘X and ⌘V, switch between windows with ⌥ Tab, keep a clipboard history, and use shortcuts such as Ctrl+Alt+Delete, window snapping, Alt+F4 and Ctrl+W. This policy explains what the app does with your information. The short version: nothing leaves your Mac.

1. What Familiar does not do

  • Familiar has no network access. It cannot send or receive data over the internet.
  • Familiar does not collect analytics, usage statistics, crash reports, identifiers or personal information.
  • Familiar has no accounts, no sign-in, no advertising and no in-app purchases.

2. What stays on your Mac

  • Settings (which features are on and which shortcuts you chose) are stored in the app's own preferences on your Mac.
  • Clipboard history, if you keep it on, is stored inside the app's sandbox container on your Mac. You can delete individual items, clear the history, limit how many items are kept, exclude images, or turn the feature off entirely in Settings. Items that password managers mark as confidential are never recorded.
  • Window previews in the ⌥ Tab switcher, if you allow Screen Recording, are captured only while the switcher is open, held in memory for a few seconds and never written to disk.

3. Permissions and why they are asked for

  • Accessibility: required so Familiar can notice its keyboard shortcuts, read which app and text field is in front, and move, resize, raise or close windows on your behalf. Familiar does not log keystrokes.
  • Screen Recording (optional): only for live window previews in the switcher.

4. Children

Familiar is a general utility and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.

5. Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
